ABOUT YAW

The program was created in 2014 by architectural designer and educator Marcus Monroe to promote diversity in design.  Located at the Brentwood Arts Exchange in Brentwood, MD, the Young Architects Workshop (YAW) is a multi-week design intensive studio that:

  • Teaches problem-solving, freehand sketching, 3D modeling, model building, and presentation skills
  • Tackles real-world projects relevant to the local community.
  • Terminates with a presentation to community partners, local professionals, family, and friends.

There is no fee and students are paid a stipend after completing YAW.

WHAT WE PLAN TO DO

  • Expand the program to a total of four (4) sites in 2019.
  • Recruit teams of two (2) architectural design professionals for each site.
  • Establish mission partnerships with like-minded businesses and organizations.

WHAT WE'VE DONE

  • Over 50 students have participated in the workshop.
  • 100% of the students have gone on to attend college.
  • Over $25,000 in stipends have been awarded to students who have successfully completed the program.
